How to Play Poker

Texas Hold’em is the most popular poker game in the world today. In most major casinos around the world, Texas Hold’em is played in big pots. But why limit games? Anytime you can take your opponent’s money, you are in a very good position to win that hand, so I always look for games with as little risk to me as possible. Most games at micro limit, like 50cents or 25cents, I find these games to be very profitable. 50cents doesn’t scare most players, and 25cents doesn’t intimidate many players either. You will find lots of games of all sizes at micro limit. Here are some tips on how to play the most popular game at micro limit:

How to Play Texas Hold’em

First of all, you need to understand the game of Texas Hold’em. The goal of Hold’em is to make the best possible 5 card poker hand out of the 7 cards available to you. The 7 cards available to you are pocket cards, face cards and the community cards. The player receives 2 pocket cards and 2 face down cards. Then the player must make the best hand out of the 5 community cards. The player may use both of his cards, one of his pocket cards and one of the community cards or neither of his pocket cards and one of the community cards on his face down card.

Whether you play one of the individual games or the entire tournament, you always need to pay attention to the starting hands. This is particularly true in the tournament format. The difference between 1 cent and 5 cents on a dollar casino poker table is huge. With the first cent game, you will want to be a certain pocket pair. In the second cent poker game, you can be anything. Do not be afraid to try and trap your opponents. When you get a free card, make sure you play it wisely and do not become too greedy. Free cards give you the opportunity to make a hand, and if you make a hand you will win, or lose, you will not lose many chips as a result.

The next thing to consider when playing any of the poker games at micro limit games is a continuation bet when you hit a soft 16 or soft 17. Depending on your skill level and your opponents’ levels of skill, you may want to place a bet anywhere from half to three quarters of the pot. You should always protect your hand when you have a set. If you are on the button, you may want to try to protect your hand by placing a small bet. If your opponent calls, you are in a very good position because you have outs to a better hand, a lower hand, or a tie.

When you are playing at higher levels, you may want to change your strategy and increase your aggression. I would try to get a pre-flop raise whenever I was the pre-flop raiser. If the flop is connected, I would bet out. If it is not, I would make a large continuation bet. This would force my opponents to either fold, calling, or bet the river. Your timing here is important. If you are up against skilled and experienced players, they will call your continuation bets. If you are not sure, follow through with a bet half the pot or more.

Middle and late stages are the best times to play aggression. If you are low on chips, playing aggressive on the flop or turn may be dangerous because you may have no chips at the river. When you have a low chip stack, you are not as likely to build your stack back to a comfortable level. However, when you have a large stack, you have the ability to take risks to win pots.

Tournament play is perhaps the best time for aggressive play. On the bubble or in the money, aggression is the flavor of the month. However, if you cannot hang with the other guys, and certainly do not want to, your best strategy is probably to lay down some hands. Again, if your opponent calls, you hang in there. If your opponent raises, you lay down some hands you should have folded or at least be planning to fold. If you do not have the discipline to let go of some hands, while continuing to bet aggressively, you can call raises to see a flop. In this situation, you have worked your way up to the point where you can only pick a hand to play, and odds are that your opponents will have similar hands.

It takes some time to learn how to play aggressively. Odds are that you will easily pick up negative expectation plays, and beginners can be very vulnerable when they hit these hands. So, be careful and make sure you understand how to play these hands when you are on the bubble or in the money.

Each of these reasons is reason why you should consider playing aggressively.
